Lighthouse Noorderhoofd - Westkapelle

The Noorderhoofd lighthouse is one of the most iconic lighthouses on the Dutch coast.
What makes the Noorderhoofd lighthouse so special?
- Landmark by the sea: With its striking red colour and white band, the tower is an unmistakable symbol of Westkapelle.
- Photogenic icon: This low lighthouse is the most photographed object in Westkapelle. Its location on the sea dike with the ocean as a backdrop makes it extremely photogenic. Whether it’s stormy or sunny, every season gives the tower a unique atmosphere.
- Maritime history: Built in 1875, the low lighthouse helped guide ships safely along the treacherous coastline. Together with the high lighthouse in the village, it formed a leading light to help sailors navigate.
- Technical details: The tower’s light had three colours – red, white and green – separated by little “curtains”. The white sector was 6000 candela, while both red and green were 1800 candela.
- Modest but unique: At around 16 metres tall, the Noorderhoofd is smaller than its taller sibling, but its position directly on the sea dike makes it just as impressive.
Tips for your visit
