Bust of Dr Mezger - Monument

In the heart of Domburg, on the small square ’t Groentje, stands a bust commemorating a man who played a key role in the history of the seaside resort: Dr Johann Georg Mezger.
Who was Dr Mezger?
- An Amsterdam Butcher’s Son with Golden Thumbs: Mezger was born on 22 August 1838 in Amsterdam. Despite his humble origins, he became one of the first and most renowned physiotherapists in the world.
- Pioneer of Manual Therapy: His innovative treatments, based on massage and manipulation of the body, laid the foundations of what we now know as physiotherapy. His remarkable skill earned him the nickname “the doctor with the golden thumbs.”
- International Fame: Mezger treated kings, emperors and aristocrats from across Europe. His ‘golden thumbs’ became world-famous, and his every move was followed by the (inter)national press.
- Own Perfume Line: His fame reached such heights that even a perfume was launched: “Eau-de-cologne by Dr J.G. Mezger.”
Dr Mezger and Domburg
- From the Amstel Hotel to the Zeeland coast: Dr Mezger worked for many years at the Amstel Hotel in Amsterdam. After marrying Middelburg-born Petronella Borsius in 1886, he increasingly chose the tranquillity of Zeeland. From that year onwards, he spent his summers in Domburg, and his distinguished patients loyally followed him to the coast. The fresh sea air, unique dunes and serene nature made Domburg, in his view, the perfect place for recovery.
Villa Irma: In 1887, Mezger built his summer residence Villa Irma on Domburgseweg, between Domburg and Oostkapelle. This stately villa served as both home and practice, where he could receive and treat his prestigious clientele in peace. Unfortunately, the villa burned down in 1949.
- Royal Clients: Mezger treated aristocrats, artists and even royal guests who travelled especially to Domburg for his famous therapies. Among them were:
- Empress Elisabeth (Sisi) of Austria
- King Gustav V of Sweden
- Tsarina Maria Feodorovna of Russia
- Queen Elisabeth of Wied of Romania, also known as the writer Carmen Sylva
The Bust on 't Groentje
- A Monument of Gratitude: The bust of Dr Mezger was unveiled in 1910 (a year after his death) and created by sculptor August F.H. Falise.
Special Inscription: The statue stands on a red granite pedestal with the inscription: “Dr J-G Mezger / born 22 Aug. 1838 / died 3 Mar. 1909 / from his grateful patients and admirers.”
- A Symbol for Domburg: The bust is more than a tribute to one man – it is a lasting symbol of Dr Mezger’s contribution to the development of Domburg as an elegant seaside and spa resort.
