Johannes Church

Right in the middle of the Markt in Domburg, directly opposite the Old Town Hall, stands the striking Johannes Church – the oldest building in the town and a beloved landmark thanks to its 38-metre tower that rises above everything else.
What can you expect at the Johannes Church in Domburg?
- Centuries of History: The tower dates back to around 1250, with the oldest parts of the church built around 1300. Over the centuries, the church was extended, destroyed, and rebuilt multiple times, retaining medieval elements such as a 15th-century basket-arch doorway.
- Unique Architecture: The church consists of a single-nave hall with a straight-ended choir and a tower built in four sections, topped with an octagonal tapered spire. Inside you’ll find, among other things, 18th-century psalm boards, a 19th-century pulpit, and a mechanical pipe organ from 1964 with seven stops.
- Restorations and Reconstruction: After a devastating fire in 1848 (caused by lightning), the church was rebuilt between 1849 and 1855. The tower was restored in 1956, and the church itself in 1963.
- Mondriaan and the Church: The Johannes Church inspired artist Piet Mondriaan during his stay in Domburg. He painted the church several times – both realistically and abstractly – and described its facade as a source of “sublimity”.
